Entering in the country:
It's possible with a passport, which must be valid for
6 months from the entrance date (at least).
You get the tourist card "Tarjeta de turismo" in the airplane, which will be stamped when entering and leaving the country (a separate visa is not required).
In Venezuela is obligatory to carry an ID, so it would be better if you have your passport or copy of it on you. Maiquetia Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional de Maiquetia) is between 25-30 Km away from Caracas. Buses and Taxis take you (US$ 15 approx) to the city. It is better to take a taxi to Macuto or La Guaira, which is just 10-15 min away and where you can find good offers in Hotels.

Continuation of the journey to Mérida:
You can continue to Mérida or to other destination from the national airport in Caracas. The national airport is 10min walk on the left side of the international airport.
The bus terminal "Terminal de Pasajeros" is located in Caracas. There you can reach all destinations with the night buses.

We recommend you to continue the journey to Mérida at the same day. It could be that this is not always possible because the last flight to Mérida departs at the end of the afternoon.
Getting in Mérida:
- by plane to the central airport, or to "El Vigia" Airport (one hour drive to Mérida)
- by bus over the transandina ("Barinas") or the Maracaibo Lake route ("El Vigia")
- by car you could
take the route over Trujillo and Valera

- San Cristobal (5h approx) almost every hour (it's possible to continue the journey to Colombia with bus transfer)

- Maracibo Lake (7h approx) it's possible to go or return from Coro with the night- or small buses in daytime.
Traveling in Venezuela:
That is not a problem because the booking for the national flight is short-dated and can be bought right before the departure. Over land buses connect regularly the main places or cities. Long way rides are mostly during the night with full air conditioning buses.
Recommendation:Take a warm jacket with you when taking the night buses.
Attention: On weekends, holidays or in the vacation time it might be hard to find a place on the bus or airplane.
